Dot and dab — also called direct bond — is the method of fixing plasterboard straight onto masonry walls using dabs of adhesive, rather than building a stud frame. It is one of the quickest ways to achieve a flat, level wall in a home or commercial building, and it leaves a clean, solid surface ready for tape and joint or skim finishing.
A.W Drylining uses dot and dab across Brighton and Hove on new-build, refurbishment and extension work. Because the board sits on adhesive dabs rather than touching the masonry, the wall is levelled as it goes, covering uneven blockwork and creating a shallow cavity that helps thermal performance and allows services to be run behind the board.
The method is fast, low-waste and produces very little mess, which makes it ideal for occupied homes and tight commercial programmes. We assess the substrate first — dot and dab needs a sound, dry, dust-free wall — and recommend a stud frame instead where the masonry is uneven, damp or needs deeper insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is dot and dab?+
Dot and dab, or direct bond, is a way of fixing plasterboard directly to a masonry wall using dabs of adhesive instead of a stud frame. It is quick, clean and produces flat, level walls.
Is dot and dab as good as a stud wall?+
Both are sound methods. Dot and dab suits solid, sound masonry and is faster; a stud frame suits uneven walls, deeper insulation or services. We advise on the right option after assessing the wall.
Can you dot and dab over damp walls?+
No. Dot and dab needs a dry, sound substrate. If there is damp or defective plaster we deal with that first or recommend an alternative build-up.
Does dot and dab need plastering?+
It can be taped and jointed for a paint-ready finish without a full skim, or skimmed if you prefer a plastered wall. We do both.
